Popayan Tourist Information
Popayán, capital of the state of Cauca, is known as the "white city" and is a Colonial architectural jewel. It is at an altitude of 1,760 meters above sea level or about 6,000 feet above sea level with a temperature of 18 degrees centigrade or 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Popayan is considered a historical-architectural patrimony and one of the most traditional cities in Colombia even though a strong earthquake destroyed a good part of its construction in 1983. Among its points of interest are the Capilla de Belén, the Ermita, the temples of San Francisco, El Carmen, La Encarnación, Santo Domingo, San José, the convent and the church of San Agustín,the Casa Caldas, the Museo Martínez, the Casa Valencia, the Casa Negret and the University of Cauca.
