Pieksanmaa Tourist Information

Communes of Jäppilä and Virtasalmi and rural commune of Pieksämäki united 1.1.2004 and formed a new municipality called Pieksänmaa. By joining Pieksänmaa is even more tempting place to live and spend free time.

Already the people from Stone Age found Pieksänmaa to be a good place to live in. Evidence of that has been found in several dwellings in Pieksämäki area. Even today nature is near in Pieksänmaa. You can live in population centre or countryside, in idyllic one-family house or by the lake.

There are excellent exercising and outdoor recreation facilities in the commune trough the year. Cross-country skiing, snow mobile driving and ice fishing are popular activities during winter time. During the summer time the variety of landscapes and terrain attract people, who are interested in nature. You find different alternatives – from paddling to motor sports.

Enjoy the lovely nature by the nature trails next to the Nikkarila School of Forestry, in the middle of the Partaharju Activity Centre and in Noronniemi in Virtasalmi. Paddle along several paddling routes: the Naarajoki paddling route, the Beaver paddling route, Haapajoki paddling route or Suihkolanjoki paddling route. The Ristikivi church located next to the Partaharju Activity Centre is the only open-air church in Finland. A great place to quieten in the middle of nature. The rural parish church of Pieksämäki dating from the 20th century is an impressive landmark.
