Petrich Tourist Information

The town is situated at the northern foot of the Belassitsa mountain, in the southern part of Blagoevgrad county and in the southwestern part of Bulgaria on an area of 650 000 decares.

The average above sea level of Petrich field is 150 m, as it varies from 90 to 200 meters. The rivers Struma and Strumeshnitsa touch the eastern slopes of Osogovo-Belasitsa mountain group to the west. At this part the valleys of the two rivers designate long and narrow ridges. In the southern part toward Belasitsa slopes the above sea level increases, as on 500 m. above sea level the mountain low lands Podgorie is formed. The territory of Petrich municipality is rich of animal types. There are many Mediterranean types concentrated here, part of which are announced as rare and threatened. Especially rich of amphibian types is Kozhuh, which has become a shelter for many threatened snakes and turtles.

It is a health resort using the mineral water from the Roupite springs. Sanatorium complex for mud medical treatment is located on the territory of the municipality in the village of Marikostinovo.

Close to the town remains from the ancient fortress of Istra.
