Pardubice Tourist Information
This town was founded on a junction of the Labe (Elbe) and Chrudimka Rivers in the 14th century. The town, which was supported by the first Prague Archbishop Arnost from Pardubice, arose from a settlement surrounding the castle area. It flourished most of all under the Pernstejnīs family rule, when the Gothic water castle was re-built as a nobly Renaissance residence. The chateau interiors contain unique Renaissance paintings and original painted cartridge ceilings. After a great fire in 1538, also he town core was re-built in the Renaissance style. It included a rectangular square and houses with facades, which were made in a uniform style; however most of them were modified in the baroque style later and have typical terracotta pieces instead the stone ones. The most famous U Jonase House is decorated with a relief of a whale swallowing the prophet Jonas. The built-up tower of the Green Gateway (Zelena brana ) along with the St. Bartolomej Church dominate the town. The town is famous for the horse-races known as "Velka pardubicka" and "Pardubicky pernik".
