Pago Pago is the political, administrative and commercial centre of the territory. The city is set on the beautiful harbour and surrounded by high, forested mountains.

Pago Pago was the setting for Somerset Maugham's well-known short story, 'Rain'. Set on a magnificent harbour and surrounded by densely forested mountains, the city has a character of its own; the market is the best place to start to capture that character - and the Fa'a Samoa.

Because of strict building guidelines that limit the height of buildings, the views of the city and harbour are magnificent from just about anywhere, and a ride on the cablecar, when it's running, affords fantastic views. From Pago Pago there is a scenic trek up Mt Alava.

The American Samoa National Park's visitor center is located in Pago Plaza and is worth a visit before exploration of the islands begins. The park is situated on parts of three islands, Tutuila, Ta'u and Ofu.

The Rainmaker Hotel is an icon of the city, and also worthy of a visit. Pago Pago is the centre for most activities, and excursions are usually based from there. For example, there is a trip to Tula Village to see traditional Samoan settlement. Another day trip goes to Aunu'u Island, where there are the amazing red quicksands at Pala Lake and surf roiling onto spectacular rocks at Ma'ama'a Cove. A two-day cruise takes in some of the outer islands and includes staying in a village overnight.
