Novosibirsk tourist information
Novosibirsk is the largest city in Siberia with population over 1,6 million inhabitants, and it is the richest city in the region.
Novosibirsk, a city spawned by the Trans-Siberian Railway, was founded in 1893 at the rail crossing of the Ob River. Thus, Novosibirsk is one of the youngest of Siberia’s big cities. Actually, until 1925 it was known as Novonikolaevsk.
The camp of the workers, who were building the bridge across the Ob River to continue the Trans-Siberian Railway, was settled in the 1893. The village was named first Alexandovsky, and later Novonikolaevsky. Due to its favorable geographical location, the village took on a special significance in trade and commerce. Soon, it became one of the most important railway stations on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
In 1925 the village was renamed to Novosibirsk. At the time it belonged to the Tomsk principality. As a result of numerous administrative divisions, Novosibirsk finally became the center of the Novosibirsk region in 1937.
Now, it is the biggest city in Siberia, an important industrial and commercial center, and most sprawling city after Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The city was considered to be the business capital of Siberia, so the largest Siberian banks and the Siberian Stock and Commodity Exchanges are situated here. The city has also a great number of ancient churches and museums. The pretty little Chapel of St. Nicolas is reckoned to be at the geographical center of Russia. Originally built in 1915 to celebrate 300th anniversary of the Romanovs dynasty, it was knocked down on the 1930s but rebuilt in 1993 for Novosibirsk centenary. About only 700m is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the city’s first stone cathedrals. The Ascension Cathedral dates from the early 1900s. It has nice blue and gold domes and is indeed beautiful inside.
