Niagara On The Lake tourist information
Niagara-on-the-Lake, often called the loveliest town in Ontario, is perhaps best known as the home of the Shaw Festival, the world's only festival dedicated to the plays of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries - but that's just the beginning of the city's charm.
Originally the site of the Neutral Indian village of Onghiara, the area surrounding Niagara-on-the-Lake was purchased in 1781 by the British Government for "300 suits of clothing". The city's beautiful old homes and tree-shaded streets speak volumes of the area's history, and make a perfect backdrop for Niagara-on-the-Lake's fine dining, shopping, estate wineries, farm markets and heritage sites.
You can take a carriage ride through Old Town, a jet boat up the Niagara River, or a short drive up the Niagara Parkway to one of the natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls. Don't miss out on nearby historic Fort George, a preserved outpost that still rings with the sounds of battle from the War of 1812. And since you're on vacation, why not tour the local wineries and indulge in some of Canada's finest vintages? It's all waiting for you in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
