Nexo Tourist Information

Fresh, because east and north-east of Nexø you find 4-600 km of the Baltic. A Baltic, from which the waves gather strengths before they meet the harbour piers, and the sea air saturated with salt, flies to the red tile roofs of the old capital of East Bornholm. In return, you find shelter in westerly wind and the rural Bornholm gives air to the friendly atmosphere of the town.

Fish, because Nexø has the largest fishing port of Bornholm and the town is the easternmost harbour of Denmark. Fishing vessels are chugging in the harbour with raw materials for the fishing industries of the town. Shipyard, net makers and other companies are servicing the fishermen and vessels of the harbour.

You can buy fresh fish at the fishmonger’s at the harbour beneath the market square. Buy one of the warm home-made fish cakes, take a rest on one the benches with a view of the yachting harbour and the approach to the fishing port, and let your own tune accompany the sea air, the gull’s call and the blinking of the sunlight in the water, while the vessels are going in and out of the harbour.

Here, you meet the people of the town; fishermen, pensioners and child-minders on a walk with the small new natives of Bornholm. If you need more than just the cries of the gulls and sea air, you can also find a café and a restaurant just on the edge of the quay, and several exciting speciality- and fashion shops have come to town. The new area with shops at the waterfront draws the town and its shoppers to the harbour and creates a coherent town area between the harbour and the market place.

In the market place of Nexø, you immediately feel another atmosphere than the vibrating harbour environment. Here, you sense the peace of the small province, the splash of the fountain and you can see the citizens of the town at slow pace doing their daily shores at the post office or in the bank. Here, you find time for a chat between friends at the market place. This is also the place for the Jazz-Week of the Baltic and for the fair days.

The pace is calming. Still, the shops of Nexø are offering almost all you can wish for. The town is the natural commercial centre of eastern Bornholm with a concentration of shops around the market place, the harbour and the surrounding streets.

If you sit at the fountain and look around the market place you see new buildings by Bornholm standard. These buildings are built after the bombardments of the Russians. The area at the market place was hit badly and after 7 and 8 May 1945 only one out of ten houses were intact in the centre of Nexø. The rebuilding of Nexø took seven years. Just like in Rønne, the Swedes helped with standard houses of wood, which are still decorating the residential neighbourhoods of Nexø.

In spite of the bombardments in 1945, you still see many preserved half-timbered houses in Nexø today, and if you take a walk in the town you will soon see something which is special for Nexø as for example the red sandstone flags of the pavement and the beautiful sandstone fences, which are surrounding the many private gardens of the town. The sandstones were left over from the production at Frederiks Quarry, which opened at the coast north of the town in 1754. The quarry also delivered sandstones to well-known buildings and memorials in Copenhagen. Today, the quarry has become Stenbrudssøen (the Quarry Lake), and Stenbrudsgården (the Quarry House) houses the Centre for Regional and Tourism Research. But at Bodilsker, a bit west of Nexø, sandstone is still being quarried but on a reduced scale though.

If you are looking for the sense and understanding of life in Nexø you have to go to the old, yellow courthouse and town hall between the harbour and the market place. Here, a group of enthusiastic people of Bornholm have made an exciting local museum through the past 40 years. You can also take a walk from the museum, about two hundred metres to the north, to the red wooden building at the harbour. Here, you find things about the harbour and the Bornholm Railways, which connected Nexø and Rønne from 1900 to 1968. Let your hand pass lightly over the fine woodwork of the mail van no. 26. This was made in Saxony in Germany in 1901 and has now been renovated to its original appearance.

If you go along the street Købmagergade you will very soon get to a beautiful sandstone fence. Behind this fence you find one of the oldest buildings of Nexø. Despite damages, Nexø Church survived the bombardments in 1945. The high unusual half-timbered tower with the steeple is the column of the town and looks over a churchyard full of old exiting tombstones.

Understand the past! A bit longer to the south you find the house of Martin Andersen Nexø. Here, the author (1869-1954) spent his youth and his works were translated into about 50 languages. In particular, he is known for his novel Pelle the Conqueror, which was made as screen version in 1986 with shootings from i.a. the harbour of Gudhjem. The house is full of personal effects, books, articles and photos related to the author’s life.

The Bornholm Butterfly and Tropical Park surprises you. In a big heated glasshouse the heat, the smell of the tropical flowers and plants, and the sounds of the tropical birds make you open your senses. Then you are ready to experience the butterflies. More than 1,000 different butterflies fly around here and you can experience the history from egg, to caterpillar and pupal stage to beautiful butterflies in their (almost) natural environment on the outskirts of Nexø.

Feel the soft shapes! On the large lawns by the coast a bit north of the harbour you can see 5 very beautiful Lithuanian wood sculptures. In the summer of 1997 5 old stems were brought from Lithuania to Nexø and 5 Lithuanian artists transformed them into sculptures, which are now situated here. 5 Lithuanian legends expressed in oak tree, which is a well-known tradition in Lithuania, but in Bornholm this is an unusual signal of the Baltic neighbourhood of Bornholm.

Nature and sea are close to the town and right south of Nexø you find one of the best places for observations of birds. It is the preserved bird sanctuary on Nexø Sydstrand, where the flat sandstones create an alga and plant vegetation, which attracts many species of wading birds and ducks.

A couple of kilometres toward south you get to the popular Balka Beach, which stretches round the Balka Bay. Here, you find a good and very child-friendly beach, where you can bike on the water – if you rent a water cycle!

Cycling in Bornholm goes smoothly. From Nexø to Balka you can cycle along the water on a nice bicycle path on the old railway track, which was built in 1900 for the Rønne-Nexø track. Continue your trip through the landscape of Bornholm along more than 200 km of bicycle paths.

Longer to the south of Nexø you find one of the three 18-hole golf courses. Dueodde Golf Course is a sea-side course situated in open countryside close to the nice Dueodde Beach.
