Mohacs Tourist Information

It is the southern “gate” of the country and the place with the most spectacular folk custom: the winter-burying, spring-greeting, Turk-frightening, Busho-marching, cheerful masked carnival!

Mohács evokes the tragic date in Hungarian history, 29 August 1526, when 20,000 Hungarian soldiers and our king, King Louis II, died here in battle. After this, Hungary was ruled by the Turks for more than 150 years.

The Byzantine-style Battlefield Memorial Church in Széchenyi Square was erected for the 400th anniversary of the battle and funded through public subscription. As a symbol of national unity, 3000 Hungarian villages, 52 towns and 25 county halls each placed a kilo of “memorial soil” into the foundation of the church (capacity: 3,600).

The alabaster altar is also a symbol: European states acknowledged - after 450 years - the heroic resistance of the Hungarians against the Turkish army, which helped to protect Europe from conquest by the Osmanli Empire.

In the Kanizsai Dorottya Museum (Szerb Street 2) we can trace both the history of the town and the Mohács battle. In this town with many ethnic groups, the varied folk art of Croats, Serbs and Slovaks can be seen in the Ethnic Group Exhibition (Városház Street 1).

Along the road to Sátorhely, the Mohács Historical Memorial on Török Hill recalls the lost battle. The tilted iron gate evoking the bones of the heroes killed in the battle, the stone rose symbolising the country torn into three parts, the bog-spruce wood in the garden surrounded by 10,000 yew trees indicating the direction of the Turkish attack, and the 5 mass graves symbolised by tomb markers with wooden headboards are all soul-stirring.
