Manuel Antonio tourist information
Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio offers the perfect combination of Costa Rica's best terrains: warm, jade-green waves lap at the roots of a lush tropical forest. Ticos treasure it, and almost all tourists stop here. Despite government efforts to regulate hotel development and pollution, litter, traffic, and car exhaust are threatening the once pristine park. With families toting beach chairs and picnic coolers along the trails and souvenir shops lining the streets, the national park is gaining a somewhat family-vacation feel, but that doesn't make the setting any less incredible: birds fill the trees with color, iguanas and spider squirrels dodge your feet, and armadillos and agoutis amble along in the underbrush. An encounter with the park's most outgoing inhabitants, the white-faced monkeys, is virtually guaranteed. They have neither fear nor shame: they'll snag your snacks, ham it up for your camera, and toss mangoes at your head all in the span of a minute. Their favorite hang-out is on the sands of the park's four spectacular beaches, all of which are easily accessible by path (or tree branch). As a result of tourists carelessly feeding the wildlife (and consequently disrupting their natural behaviors and instincts), the monkeys are especially responsive to gloating humans. Please refrain from feeding any of the animals.
