Manizales Tourist Information
Manizales is the capital of the state of Caldas, it is known as one of the cultural centers of the country due to its universities and the education of its people. It is also one of the main producers of coffee in the country. Founded in 1849 Manizales is in a very mountainous area with many ravines. This gives the town its own particular look with streets that are steeply inclined. In this area you find the Volcano the Nevado del Ruiz at an altitude of 5,400 meters or about 13,000 feet. In 1922, 1925 and 1926 the city was successively destroyed by fires that burned the greater part of the important constructions, typical of the regional architecture. However, some neighborhoods still exist with examples of this period. In subsequent years they constructed buildings in the European style, among which are the old Estación del Ferrocarril, the Gobernación de Caldas, the Edificio Sanz, the Palacio Arzobispal and the monumental Cathedral, the last large Basílica built in the country with French plans and a Gothic design. It has become the symbol of the city and reflects the profound religiousness of its inhabitants. Recently, the coffee growers have begun to convert their plantations into tourist housing for those who wish to learn more about the cultivation of coffee. To learn how the people live, plant, pick, toast and grind the coffee. The plantations Santa Helena, La Quinto, La hermita, Casa blanca and El Encanto each have room for between 20 and 30 people. For those interested in architecture we recommend visiting the neighboring towns of Aguadas, Marmato and Salamina, named National Monuments for their constructions in adobe and their Antioquean colonial architecture. Also worth a visit is Chinchiná, second city in the state and an important center of coffee production where important scientific investigations on coffee are conducted. Another important coffee center is Palestina which is surrounded by various vacation resorts.
