Luumaki Tourist Information
Luumäki is famous as the home town of P.E. Svinhufvud, a former President of Finland. In the center of Taavetti there are Local History and Culture Museum and Taavetti fortifications, which were part of Hamina Vyborg fortification line. The President´s home, Kotkaniemi, is open to groups by prior arrangement. The museum and the church designed by C.L. Engel from 1845 are open in summer.
The Taavetti Fortress from the 1700s is part of a chain of fortresses in south-eastern Finland. Over 90 per cent of the formidable Salpalinja constructions are in the region between the Gulf of Finland and Lake Saimaa. The best way to familiarise oneself with the bunkers are the guided excursions arranged by Salpasafaris, and their off-road and snowmobile safaris, descents on a rope, and splat tournaments are well worth experiencing, too.
The traditional Luumäki Day is arranged on the second weekend of July. The Luumäki Summer Fun series of events takes place during the summer months, the Taavetti Summer Market is open on weekdays, and the Luotonen Cow Shed Gallery is open to visitors on Wednesdays.
