Leticia Tourist Information
The capital of the state of the Amazonas, Leticia is the entrance way to the rich rain forest area of Colombia. Leticia was founded in 1867 by the Peruvean Capitan Benigno Bustamante, Governor of the District of Loreto. Located on the banks of the Amazon river, the city offers excellent restaurants of typical and international food. Its modern hotels offer all the comforts necessary for a pleasant stay. Leticia is joined to the rest of the country mainly by air. The major points of interest are the Ethnographic Museum, dedicated to the aborigines of the region. There you will find hundreds of objects from distinct native cultures. The "Francisco José de Caldas" Zoo and the Botanical Garden have samples of Colombia's amazing Amazon flora and fauna. Close to Leticia you will find beautiful lakes such as those in the Yahuarcacas region, and close to Puerto Nariño, are the lakes of Tarapoto, in the river bed of the caño. You can also visit the lakes of Zaraiva, Terezinha, Laguiño and Laguna Grande, on Brazilian territory, and the Moroyoa lake in Perú. The calm waters of these lakes are favored by Tuna, divers and the serene Victoria Regia, the flower of the Amazon.
