Lahti tourist information
Lahti is a vigorous cultural, sports and business centre in Päijät - Häme. The modern lakeside city amidst the Salpausselkä ridge landscape of great natural beauty offers excellent year-round outdoor exercise and cultural facilities, as well as a favourable, vibrant business environment.
The very heart of our city is the market square with its cheerful stalls and outdoor coffee bars. On the eastern edge of the market square you will easily find the "kauppahalli" - which translates to `shopping arcade´. Walk through this interesting corridor of shops to the next street, savouring the sights and the smells, then back again to where you came in.
The harbour area, long forgotten but now rediscovered, is Lahti's new living room. Seat yourself on one of the lakeside terraces and simply absorb the beauty of the place, then go and be amazed by the Sibelius Hall, the musical fountains, the Lanu Sculpture Park and the Vonkale Fishing Park . All of these, plus our Summer Theatre, are on the same stretch of shoreline and all within easy walking distance of each other.
On the southern side of the city in the Laune Family Park and/or the Laune Domestic Animal Park the smaller ones of the family are sure to have a wonderful time ! In a straight line it isn't far to go - but jump on rubber-wheeled Pusku train for kids. Good fun !
If modern Finnish architecture interests you then the Lahti Cultural Centre is a must. This group of buildings contains the Lahti Theatre, the Lahti Public Library, the Lahti Adult Education Centre and the Lahti Design Institute.
Whether you are a devotee of track and field sports you should visit our Sports Centre. You'll be glad you did. Take the lift to the top of the biggest ski jumping hill for a breathtaking panorama and also to get some idea of how a ski jumper feels.
A little more special among the sights on offer are the rose garden Rosario, the presentation of wood species Arboretum and the observatory Ursa.
Your choice - but don't be shy about trying something quite new. Remember the words of the great American poet, Robert Frost; "Two paths diverged in a yellow wood, and I took the one less travelled by and that has made all the difference."
Lahti is an excellent location for meetings, conferences and congresses. Our record speaks for itself of the successful, regular organisation of many national and international conferences.
Leisure activities, too, are organised here. See the sights and landmarks of Lahti, go to concerts or to the theatre, relax and enjoy it all.
Would you like stay right in the heart of the city or by a lakeshore a little further away? Take your pick from several pleasant, high quality hotels and cottages.
Comfortable accommodation is also available at travelers' homes and apartment hotels. In summertime, you can camp by Lake Vesijärvi, just a few kilometers from downtown Lahti, on high standard camping areas.
The diversity of restaurants in Lahti offers delights for all tastes. Whether you are looking for fast food or an á la carte menu with all the frills, it's all here. How about trying an ethnic variation, Bulgarian food ? Recommended !
We also have lots of cozy cafeterias that offer delicious products of their own bakeries. Take the weight off your feet during your shopping expedition, relax and enjoy !
The lively nightlife of Lahti can surprise the bar hoppers with hunger. No problem: many restaurants and pubs serve food and snacks until the small hours.
The compact size of Lahti makes it an excellent place for shopping. There are many specialized shops, department stores, shopping malls, supermarkets, and even factory outlets in the city.
