Only 20km south of the Nicaraguan border at Peñas Blancas, in the province of Guanacaste, the city of La Cruz is the area's only urban mix of Nica and Tica. Somewhere, between the sweeping views of Bahía Salinas is the legend of the namesake of La Cruz. Some say it commemorates a mule driver who died working his way up a cliff, and is now buried amidst the natural splendor with only the denotation of a cross. Others say that the town was named for the infamous Cruz de Pierda, in the nearby Parque Nacional de Santa Rosa. While the origin of its namesake is open to questioning, the lush, natural beauty of the area is not. The city is a surprisingly quiet and charming base for day-trips to the deserted and even more beautiful Playas Soley, Morro, Jobo, and La Rajada.
