Kruja Tourist Information
Kruja in ancient times was called Bistrum Albanum, maybe becuse of the near city of Albanopolis. Archaeological research has verified that Kruja has been a Illyrian city of the III century b.c. In the XI century was the centre of the Principate of Arberia, first example of feudalism in Albania. In the XIII century Kruja was a member of the feud of Topia.
In 1405 in Kruja Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu was born. Invaded by Ottomans in 1415, Kruja was liberated by Skenderbeu in 1443 and remained in the center of attention of entire Europe because the Ottomans were stopped there by the fierce and self-sacrificing spirit of Albanians under the guide of Skenderbeu.
The end of the Albanian freedom was in 1478 when Skenderbeu died. The Ottomans destroyed the Entire city and massacred the inhabitants after they won against Albanian troops.
The Fortress of Kruja represents a symbol of a long war against the greates enemy of all times. It is a symbol of freedom and pride. Unfortunately, today there are few remainings from the original Fortress. What is actually in Kruja is a work of reconstruction, but not a very happy one. Together with the reconstruction a museum was built, its contents is a real treasure of Albanian history.
