Kromeriz Tourist Information

Kromeriz - favorably located at a ford on the river Morava in the fertile lowlands of the Hana region (Central Moravia). The town first appeared in historical annals in 1110, when its future development was irrevocably tied to the fortunes of the leading representatives of the Catholic Church. In 1777, this town, with its chateau and splendid gardens, became a residence of the Archbishops of Olomouc. Its development was significantly influenced by the year 1848, when the Imperial Assembly gathered there and was entrusted with the task of drafting a constitution for the nations incorporated in the Habsburg monarchy. Although the deliberations failed to bear any fruit, it was there that for the first time in history that the words “All the powers of the state shall issue from the nation…” were heard. The Assembly played a significant role in advancing self-determination of nations and the development of democracy throughout Europe. The UNESCO list includes the Archbishop’s chateau with its Flower Garden and the Garden Below the Chateau.
