Krasnoyarsk tourist information
In 1628 Andrey Dubensky with 300 Cossaks found a favorable place for building a fortress on the tongue of land between the Katcha and the Yenisey Rivers. The fortress was built to guard southeastern borders of the expanding Russian Empire and to lay under tribute local nomadic tribes of Tatars. It was named Krasny Yar (a steep bank of reddish color) due to its position - it was situated against the background of a high and steep bank of the Yenisey composed mainly of red clay.
In 1690 Krasnoyarsk received the status of a city when Siberia was finally incorporated into the Russian Empire.
Krasnoyarsk grew from a 17th century Cossack fort to its present size thanks o the discovery of gold in the 19th century, arrival of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the shifting of factories here during WWII.
Krasnoyarsk Territory was created in 1934 and then included the Taymyr and Evenk autonomous districts and Khakasiya Autonomous Region. In 1991, Khakasiya, Evenk and Taymyr districts seceded and became autonomous areas within the Russian Federation.
Krasnoyarsk today is one of the biggest cultural, industrial and scientific centers of Eastern Siberia. Once closed to foreigners because of a concentration of defense-related industries, Krasnoyarsk is now open for tourists and guests from all over the world.
