The largest center of population on the west coast of the island is the town of Kralendijk - locally called "Playa" (meaning "beach"). Facing west from the main town you see the uninhabited island of "Klein Bonaire". Only about 5% of the total land area of the island is developed. The rest is pretty much as Mother Nature left it: cactus, thorny scrub, wild donkeys, grazing goats, and lots and lots of ocean....Despite its small size, nature conservation is high on the agenda and more than 20% of the total land area of Bonaire and 100% of the waters surrounding Bonaire and Klein Bonaire are protected as Parks.
