Kortrijk tourist information
The busy town centre of Kortrijk, with the Grote Markt at its heart, is a collection of splendid buildings, the most notable of which are the late gothic Town Hall, the Belfry with its famous chimes Manten and Kalle, and the serene Begijnhof (Beguine Convent) with its 40 well-preserved baroque houses.
The municipal museums extensively cover Kortrijk's rich commercial past as a major textile centre. Do not fail to visit the Nationaal Vlasmuseum (National Flax Museum), set in the magnificently restored Beeuwsaerthoeve. Find out all you ever wanted to know about flax growing and processing, and the unique role played by river Leie, the "Golden River".
As part of its historic heritage, Kortrijk still keenly commemorates the Battle of the Spurs, when the Flemish towns defeated the French army at Groeningekouter. The feat took place on July 11, 1302. This date (11 July) now marks the Flemish Community Day.
