Killybegs Tourist Information
Killybegs is an excellent place to base yourself when touring the south west of Donegal. A lively fishing town with Ireland's largest fleet of trawlers. Killybegs is a bustling town where local and foreign ships tower over the quayside. With large number of both trendy and modern restaurants and the more traditional pubs, killybegs offers the visitor a variety of good food, drink and entertainment.
Killybegs was granted borough status in 1616 by King James but it looks very much like a late Vistorian Village built around a good harbour, which is now a major fishing port. It is a major centre for the Irish fishing industry and trawlers tie-up here from many foreign ports. The arrival of the fishing fleet and unloading of the catches for the gourmet restaurant of Ireland and of Europe is a sight worth seeing and an experience you will remember. The harbour has been there for a long time and the Four Masters record that St. Catherine, the patron Saint, saved it from destruction in 1513.
St. Catherines Church here is a surprise. Designed by J.B Papworth, it was built in the 1840's of good materials and has an impressively large interior 30m by 12m in the centre, opening through delightfully proportioned arches to transepts. Near the tower is the interesting tomb slab of Niall mor Mac Sweeney, which is well decorated with representations of a gallowglass amongst stylised, interlace design. Killybegs and the surrounding area has a large number of sites of archaeological and historical interest including Neolithic Tombs and the many Mass rocks dating back to the penal times of the 17th century. In 1999, the Croaghlin Mass Rock was restored and made easily accessible to the public. this was one of the Millennium projects undertaking by the local community.
