Kastav Tourist Information
A long popular weekend resort of the inhabitants of Rijeka even today. In 1898 the Society for Improvement of Kastav was founded. The excursionists are particularly attracted by the position of the town which offers a view on the whole Kvarner, on Luzina Forest with the karst cave Sparozna Jama, domestic food (sour beet, manestra) and a quality wine - Kastavska Belica. The mountain-climbing society "Kastav" routed an ecological path through Luzina Forest (which includes learning about rare and protected plant species and descent to Sparozna Jama). Several cultural manifestations take place in Kastav, some of them dating back to ancient times - Bela nedeja (since 1400), the young wine ceremony on the first Sunday in October, together with the local fair; masquerades (January/February) take place every Saturday evening, and on the eve of the Ash Wednesday the Bell Ringers of Halubajahave their show, interesting for all lovers of native traditions; Kastav Cultural Summer - international culture festival; the holiday of St. Helena - the patron saint of Kastav (22nd of May). KASTAV, a town 11 km north-west of Rijeka, situated on the dominating, isolated hill, with a beautiful view on Kvarner; elevation 377 m; popu-lation 930. Centre of the Kastavstina region, a part of the broader urban zone of Rijeka. Chief occupations are farming and viniculture. The town is located on the local road Matulji - Jusici.
