What makes Jericoacoara a special place isn't only the unusual beauty of its beaches that combine dunes of white sands, coconut plantation and incredible blue seawaters.
Jeri, as it is known, although have been discovered by tourism over three decades, keeps characteristics of a small fishermen's village. It continues almost isolated and the access depends on special vehicles to overcome kilometers of pathways on sands that separate it from the nearest road. Streets don't have pavement and the energy electric net is recent. To maintain the control on environment, a large area around the village became national park. Jericoacoara is 310 km far from Fortaleza's west, the capital of Ceará State.
Ancient inhabitants still live in thorps and many converted their houses into simple inns and restaurants. They live together with tourists in harmony, since 70 years, when young hippies discovered Jericoacoara. Today, tourists all around the country and foreigners enjoy the wonderful beaches, make buggy strolls by extent coastline, sails on blue and clean lagoon waters. Late in the afternoon they observe a wonderful sunset from an enormous dune. At night, they fill up restaurants to taste some of the delicious fishes and seafoods recipes, and also enjoy an authentical forró. There are no luxurious hotels or resorts.
Jericoacoara was part of a list with the most beautiful beaches in the world published by a North-American magazine. It's really wonderful - a bay surrounded by white sand dunes. There is a sequence of semi desert beaches on the west and east side of the village. The sea is blue and, in many parts, coconut plantations form paradisiacal sceneries. It's also worthy to visit rocky formations sculptured by seawaters and wind, such as Pedra Furada and Piscina da Princesa.
Tatajuba is a fishermen's thorp with few little fishermen's houses. It was built after sand covered the ancient village. Impelled by winds, local dunes change themselves constantly. It was now built, Nova Tatajuba, which reacquires the original name over time. Buggy without roof makes the route by beaches, crosses over Guriú's river by a rustic ferryboat, goes along enormous sand formations and takes you for baths in lagoons. On the end, a stop on a rustic bar for eating delicious snacks to the seashore.
It’s also known as Lagoa do Paraíso and has bluish tonalities waters. It's an ideal place for free diving, sailing and windsurfing. It's 20 Km far from Jericocoara and surrounded by inns and restaurants.
Late in the afternoon many people climbs up the major Jeri dune, with about 30 meters to observe the sunset. It's a rare opportunity in Brazil to see the sunset on the sea.
Almost all Jericoacoara's inns are simple and small, although most of them are equipped to offer a reasonable comfort, such as air conditioner in apartments. Restaurants serve dishes of different specialties, but it should be detached restaurants, which prepare fishes and seafoods. There’s no bank branch on the local.
Before going to Jericoacoara, you need to stop in Jijoca de Jericoacoara, which is a town base, which pertains the thorp. It's 280 km far from Fortaleza by asphalted roads till Jijoca. When you get there, you need to rent a special vehicle (buggy, van or bus) to go along 30 km of narrow sand ways and a way with dunes. There are buses to the village that depart from Fortaleza.
