Jaguaripe

With marvelous beaches, historical buildings and unique natural beauty, Jaguaripe is ideal for those who like adventure and sports. It is great for surfing and it also has amazing trails for hiking in the middle of the Atlantic Forest. You cannot miss it!

The city is located on a strip of land between the Jaguaripe river and its main tributary, the Dona's river, one of the greatest habitats for robalos. Surrounded by extensive mangroves as far as the Jaguaripe estuary. The main attraction of the city is an ecological sanctuary, with bright-sanded beaches, streams, stretches of Atlantic Forest and mangrove channels where you can find birds, wolves, foxes, pacas, armadillos and a great variety of fish and shellfish - a result of the meeting between the river and the ocean. The harbor is suitable for medium sized boats and it is located six miles from the estuary.

In the Tupi language, Jaguaripe means "jaguar's river". Wood extraction was the first economic activity of the region. The historian Gabriel Soares was one of the first colonizers who owned a mill in Jaguaripe's Valley, in the late 16th century. Arraial de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda was founded some years later and became the first city in the region which is known as Recôncavo. Later, it became a point on the route for D. Pedro II in his visit to Bahia.
