Ipiales is known as the city of "the green clouds" due to its beautiful landscapes. Here you can enjoy the good highways and roads surrounded by vegetation that allows you to breathe fresh clean air. This municipality is the second in population in the state of Nariño and is the Colombian city closest to the border with Ecuador. The International Bridge of Rumichaca, between Ipiales and Tulcán (Ecuador), is the site of commercial activity and cultural exchange between the regions. The main attraction is the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de las Lajas, where thousands of tourists visit the revered Virgen de las Lajas throughout the year making this beautiful city one of the most important for pilgrims in the Americas. The Sanctuary, built at the beginning of the century, is constructed along the canyon of the Guáitara river and is a magnificent example of Republican architecture. This church, whose construction started January 1, 1916 was given the name of the Basílica Menor on August 30, 1954 by Pope Pius XII. other places of interest are the Banco de la República, the Museo del Oro, where one can find valuable gold jewelry from the native cultures, the Parque de la Pola, which is an open market on Wednesday and Saturday, the Cathedral San Felipe; the Instituto de Cultura; and the Avenida Olímpica, where the Municipal Stadium is located.
