Ilha De Marajo

Bathed by Atlantic Ocean and by the rivers Amazonas and Tocantins, it’s part of the largest fluvio-marine archipelago on the world. Plateaus mainly compose its relief, so during the intense rainy periods, from February to May, part of its territory is flooded. Therefore, it has the appropriate conditions to the breeding of buffalos, and it has the biggest flock on Brazil. There, these animals are normally used on the transportation, on fields or on the city, and their meat is the base of some typical dishes on the region. Visiting one of the adapted farms for hosting tourists is a good way to know the Marajó environment, mainly the several birds springs. On the Ilha de Marajó side to the sea, there are beaches so beautiful as the most beautiful beaches on the country, with small white sand dunes and coconut palms. The regional culture is present on the presentations of folkloric dances, like lundu and carimbó, and on Museu do Marajó (Marajó's Museum), on Cachoeira do Arari.

Although keeping their normal livestock activities, they receive tourists. Also organize hikes, boat sailings or buffalos rides, so that visitors can be in contact with the local environment. It’s also possible being lodged on a typical farm on the fields of the island interior.

The beautiful beaches do Pesqueiro, Araruna and Barra Velha are near to the Soure center. On Salvaterra town, are the beaches de Joanes, Monsarás and Grande. Most of them have white sand, small dunes and blue sea. On the most visited beaches, there are rustic tents that serve drinks and snacks.

It’s on the small city Cachoeira do Arari, 75 km far from Soure, by an earth road that crosses the plain. That trip is a chance of being in contact with the exotic environment of the island interior. It exposes pieces of old Marajó’s ceramic, found in excavations, besides the craft and typical objects of the regional culture. Marajó’s food Dishes prepared with buffalo meat that represent the regional cookery can be found on Soure’s restaurants: vaqueiro fried (little cubes of fried meat) and the Marajó’s filet (covered with buffalo’s cheese).

The hotels, inns and restaurants are on the two main cities: Soure and Salvaterra. Most of them are simple, but offer equipments like conditioned air, that helps keeping cold on the region. The Ilha Mexiana (Mexiana Island), that is part of the archipelago, has a big resort.

The access to the island is by boat or by ferryboat, from Belém. It takes 3 hours. Another option is flights from air taxi companies. Tourism agencies on Belém organize full packages to Marajó.
