Ieper tourist information

Ieper, nicknamed "kattenstad" or city of cats, came under heavy fire during World War I for four long years. As a result, the city now offers a quaint mix of recent structures and war monuments.

The Lakenhalle (Drapers' Hall) and Town Hall, both on Oude Markt , make up an interesting ensemble, not least for their unique pointed-arch gallery. The newly founded World War I memorial museum In Flanders Fields is housed here. The museum was inaugurated in 1998 and features the use of modern techniques recreating the history of the "Great War". The scenes depicting the ravages of the War stand as a staunch reminder of the sheer insanity of all wars.

Every three years, Ieper stages its traditional Kattenstoet , a colourful procession which culminates with the « Kattenworp » (literally "cat throwing").

In nearby Zillebeke, the Bellewaerde amusement park provides you with the option of a carefree day out with its numerous theme attractions.
