Hasle Tourist Information

Do you want to sense the smoke from the burning alder, when it is moistened with the wet rag? Do you want to see the herrings hanging in a row in the old smokehouse? Do you want to taste the warm, fat herring directly from the wood fire? Then come to Hasle!

From 8.00 the Museum Smokehouses of Hasle start smoking herrings. And a bit before noon you can taste the warm fresh-smoked herrings – as well as various accompaniments and drink, which you can buy and enjoy on the spot, inside or outside. Service is available all day during the season and it’s a good place to enjoy the sunset.

This is just south of Hasle harbour where a number of smokehouses have been renovated and now run in the traditional way. In one of them you can see an exhibition of the history of herring smoking with both pictures and wall sheets. The smokehouses are situated directly to the westerly coast, next door to the youth hostel, the camping site and the nice open natural resort, Hasle Fælled.

Hasle is an unspoiled fishing town on the west coast of Bornholm. The town is situated against the steep slopes opposite the harbour and the town has its own charm. In the harbour, you can still find a number of active fishing boats, yachts and small yawls. In the northern part of the harbour, as the first place in Bornholm, you find a new house building, which has tried to unite the attractive harbour atmosphere with modern housing.

Go to the market place with the old town hall from 1855. These days, you will find The Textile College of Bornholm. Around the market place and along the main street you find most of the shops of the town. To the left of the town hall, in the street with the cobbles, you find the beautiful Hasle Church surrounded by the green peace of the cemetery. One of the graves belongs to the most famous son of the town, the opera singer Vilhelm Herold.

Do you want to see modern arts and crafts gathered in an interesting new gallery? Then Hasle is the right place. At Grønbechs Gård, an old merchant’s house in the centre of Hasle, the recognized artists and craftsmen are showing their works of textile, glass, ceramics, wood etc. If you want to see how to make art of glass you can go to the ground floor where you can find a glassworks with an open workshop.

If you want to hear the characteristic thump thump thump from an old cutter-motor and see the flywheel work then you share the interest with a group of Hasle-inmates of the motor club Columbus. In a part of Grønbechs Gård, you can find 68 engines from the period of 1904 to 1980 from a ½ hp engine to the biggest one of 330 hp. The people of Columbus have also established a museum of ship’s radios at Grønbechs Gård.

Another exhibition at Grønbechs Gård tells about The Maritime Hasle - the many small sights in connection with the fishery and the sea, which you can meet on a fresh walk along the coast south of the town. To the north, the bicycle path takes you by the small idyllic fishing hamlets Helligpeder and Teglkås, from where a path and a bicycle track continue along the fantastic rocky coast towards Vang and Hammershus.

Karetmagergården, a few steps from the market place has been beautifully restored. The building contains the tourist information office, different workshops and exhibitions with relation to arts and crafts.
