Grimbergen Belgium
Grimbergen situated northwest of Brussels, is a village with quite a bit of picturesque corners. The village square is dominated by the monumental church of the Norbertine Abbey, with its beautiful baroque interior. The “Guldendal”, a 17th century coach-house and two watermills situated by the Maalbeek, house the Museum of Older Techniques. In this museum you can find out how people used to grind corn, how they used to wash and iron, how wood was, and still is, used in a wide variety of ways and all about the cultivation of rice in Japan around the turn of the century. Another exhibition has been dedicated to “bread” and in the out-buildings of the Norbertine Abbey, a “beer Museum” has opened its doors.
If you have an interest in flowers and trees, you will definitely enjoy a visit to the National Botanical Gardens in Meise, a neighbouring parish of Grimbergen. There you can discover an extensive collection of plants and flowers from all over the world in thirteen huge exhibition glasshouses situated in part of the 93 hectares castle-domain of Bouchout.
For a visit to Grimbergen and surroundings, one can choose between a day-trip and a few half-day-trips.
