Goias Tourist Information
Goias
Goiás city, or old Goiás, as it’s also known, keeps one of the most luxurious architectonic and cultural patrimony of the country. That’s why Unesco designated the historical center Cultural Patrimony of Humanity in 2001. Its quiet streets keeps the original pavement with stones, and the historical buildings from XVIII century shows a colonial architecture where remains the simplicity with few baroque influences. The origin of the city is related to Brazilian territory exploitation by paulistas bandeirantes. In the first years of the XVIII century, provisory settlings were raised for sheltering gold miners. Arraial de Sant'Anna, founded by Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva in 1725 on the border of Vermelho river, became the currently city Goiás. Approximately on 1750, that time named Vila Boa de Goiás, it became the newly created captaincy Goiás, dismembered from the São Paulo captaincy. Only in 1937, the state political power was transferred to the new state capital, Goiânia.
You can be in touch with the history of the city. You only walk on the streets, go to the churches, admire old buildings, visit the house where lived the most illustrious resident, the poetess Cora Coralina, or visit Museu das Bandeiras (Bandeiras' Museum). There are past cultural heritage seen in candies and religious demonstrations, such as Procissão do Fogaréu of the Holy Week (see in Brazil's calendar events, in this portal). If you enjoy nature, there are hikes through the environmental reserve on Serra Dourada, in one side of the city.
Most of them are from XVIII century and reveal simple style. Boa Morte Church (1779) is the only one that has typical baroque elements on frontage. It houses the Museu de Arte Sacra (Sacred Art Museum), detaching Veiga Valle pictures, local sculptor who lived in XIX century. You should also visit the churches São Francisco de Paula (1761), N.S. do Carmo (1786), N.S. da Abadia (1790) and Santa Bárbara (1780).
In the big building built in 1761 where there was the prison, stateroom and justice room is located Museu das Bandeiras that exposes objects used in the gold exploitation. The Palácio Conde dos Arcos (Conde dos Arcos Palace) (1755), which houses a museum, was built to house the captaincy government. Every year, in the birth of the city, it houses the government home office, transferred from Goiânia for a few days. XX Quartel (1747), Casa do Bispo (Bispo's House) and fountains of Boa Morte and Largo da Carioca are other significant buildings.
The big house where lived the poetess and confectioner is located at the bridge headboard over Vermelho sea. One of the first Goiás' buildings, it’s a typical house from XVI century and inspired some of her poems. In one part of the house, it was built a small museum that honors the most famous Goiás’ daughter.
An old tradition from Goiás city is alfenins, Portuguese candies made with sugar and powder with nice animal formats. Crystallized fruit candies are also famous and the visitor can the observe confectioners’ work.
Beyond inns on the historical center, there are hotels on farmers and surroundings. There are branches from the main banks.
Goiás is 140 Km far from Goiânia by the road GO-070. Many buses depart from the capital regularly.
