Ganvie Tourist Information
Ganvie
GANVIE has a population of more than fifteen thousand inhabitants. The city will always draw the attention of the visitor, who will admire the charm of its calm streets including the " Rue des Amoureux" (Street of lovers) sprinkled not with gondolas like in Venice but with nice canoes or heavy small boats loaded to the brim.
Certainly the visitor will not hear the nice canto of gondoliers but the obsessive drums will punctuate his visit. On rare and small humpbacks protruding here and there between the stilts, the pigs and the chickens fight over food.
On the watery beach of the village, the sellers in their canoes offer various foodstuffs and articles. If the six-year-old budding fishermen throw their net on your way, it is because it stands for their marble, ball or kite. Later on, they will throw the big net, the one that their fathers spread out in their AKADJA in a gesture which recalls both choreography and offering to a god . The beliefs and mystical and religious demonstrations hold an important place in the life of GANVIE inhabitants.
Obeying a secret instinct, the GANVIENU (natives of Ganvié) are still respectfully observing the rites of their folk. They endeavour to faithfully perpetuate the age-old traditions, while denuding them of their feudal aspects. For the trip, a wharf situated in d'Abomey-Calavi allows you to leave for Ganvié, but you can easily take a canoe to go from one village to the other. Near the wharf, a semi-floating market takes place, where the GANVIENU come to buy and sell their fishing products. After leaving the swampy side, go towards the open lake where there are many canoes loaded with cool water canaries that you can procure at the shore . You’ll soon find stilted rectangular huts scattered over the lake and made of palm leaves or bamboo. You use a ladder to get into the habitations where the main room is located at a second floor above the lower platform made of clay. Some of the huts have balconies and are painted with geometric and multicolour designs. Cult huts are smaller and isolated .
