Fort Scott Kansas Tourist Information

Established and garrisoned by the U.S. Army from 1842-1853, solders at Fort Scott assisted with the protection of the "Permanent Indian Frontier." After the army abandoned the fort in 1853, the buildings were purchased by local settlers at a government auction in 1855. The former military post became the center of one of the largest towns in Kansas territory.

Constructed in 1842, Fort Scott, today a National Historic Site, was one of the guardians of America’s Great Western Border. During the 1850s a bustling community grew up next to the fort. Today, this history spanning the frontier to Victorian eras comes alive. Discover the role played by dragoons and infantry in the Permanent Indian Frontier, the Mexican War, and westward expansion. Immerse in the conflict and turmoil of the Bleeding Kansas years, imagine the sights and sounds of soldiers drilling as they prepare for the Civil War, or step across time into the restored downtown. Attractions include the 1840s restored fort, trolley tours, Victorian mansions and downtown with gift and antique shops, museums, and year-round special events.

Fort Scott National Cemetery is one of the 12 original national cemeteries designated by president Abraham Lincoln in 1862. Union and Confederate soldiers, Buffalo soldiers, Indian fighters, and Unknown soldiers, all are buried on the grounds. Among the straight rows of white headstones are 13 grave markers set at an angle. The bodies of Confederate soldiers, who were at "cross-purposes" with union soldiers, are buried there.
