Fort Fraser British Columbia Tourist Information
Established in 1806, Fort Fraser is a short walk from the Last Spike, driven on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1914. During construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific, almost 3,000 people lived in Fort Fraser, and the town was promoted in the real estate market as the hub of B.C. Many pioneers acquired land and started farms and logging operations. These two economic sectors are still the main sources of income for the community today.
Today, many farms in the area welcome visitors. At the Rogers farm, delight in seeing more than 400 varieties of flowers, including the lovely Iris Garden.
Visiting some of the old churches is also worthwhile. The United Church and the Anglican Lutheran Church were built in 1926 and 1928. Both buildings show the architectural style of the 20s.
Fort Fraser's rural setting also invites all manner of outdoor activities. Swim or fish in the many lakes and rivers around Fort Fraser, including the nearby Nautley River, B.C.'s shortest river. The aboriginal people who lived near the river measured a river by its salmon run, not its length, however. The Nadleh legends speak of a river so red with spawning salmon that the river appeared to be bleeding. Canoeing or kayaking are also enjoyed in the region.
Nature trails are another attraction. Hike to the top of Fraser Mountain and visit the old forestry fire look-out tower — the views of the valley and its mountains and lakes below are breathtaking. Ormond Creek Trail is another favourite hike.
Kenney Dam, one of the largest land-filled dams in the world, is within easy access of Fort Fraser. The Holy Cross Forestry Road takes you to the dam and Cheslatta Falls, where you also find more hiking trails and a campsite.
