Fagatogo is a sizeable village if you take into account the mountainsides. Flat space is not plentiful in the village residents refer to as downtown. As American Samoa attained greater autonomy the size of government began to grow and de-centralization of government departments became necessary and Fagatogo’s prominence as the seat of the American Samoa Government slowly faded. Today government offices are spread between Fagatogo, Utulei, where the three story Executive Office Building houses most agencies, Faga’alu and Tafuna. Fagatogo came into the limelight once again on January 3, when leaders of the executive branch were sworn in and members of the legislature elected a Senate President and Speaker of the House. Governor Tauese Sunia, Senate President Lutu Tenari Fuimaono and House Speaker Matagi Ray McMoore all have one thing in common. They all hail from Fagatogo. And during inauguration activities held the first week of 2001, the three leaders made sure word got around that the town boys were in control.
