Eurajoki Tourist Information

Eurajoki Municipality is located on the West coast of Southern Finland. The Coastal Highway 8 (Turku - Pori - Vaasa - Oulu) runs through Eurajoki. In the West Eurajoki is bordered by the Gulf of Bothnia, a gulf between Finland and Sweden.

When the Ice Age (c. 9700-9500 years ago) ended, the huge ice masses melted filling the Gulf of Bothnia. On this so-called Yoldian era, Eurajoki was covered by c. 150 metres (500 ft.) of water. On the Stone Age (c. 3000 B.C.) the highest points of the area were islands but were not populated yet. On the next 1000 years the water level dropped to +35 - +32 metres uncovering more land for the fishermen and seal hunters to move in. Hammer-type stone axes and parts of ceramic pots decorated by combed ornaments have been found in Eurajoki. In the start of the Bronze Age (c. 3500 years ago) the water was still 30 metres (100 ft.) higher than now, but dropped to +20 m till the beginning of the iron age (c. 500 B.C.). Most of the fields that are in agricultural use today were at that time under water. In many places that were seashore on the Bronze Age, there are great stone piles to be found. These were burial places on the Bronze Age. Eurajoki, or Eura River Valley, was first mentioned in public documents on February 19. year 1344 when a local priest and some other persons offered the Bishop of Turku money and a farm to cover their dept to the Church. Eurajoki Municipality was founded on 1869 when the Communal Independence Act was finally given. The Act separated the Community and the Church.
