You can come to Eno by road from five different directions, by rail from east and west and by water up or down the River Pielisjoki. There are two railroad stations and a harbour in Eno, and the nearest airport is in Joensuu.

Eno was a part of the wide parish of Ilomantsi until 1858. Parochial separation happened 1857 when the independent parish of Eno was formed. The actual municipality was founded in 1871 when the local government began operations.

According to historical sources there has been settlement in Eno since the 16th century, when there was 20 houses in the area. Nowadays the number of inhabitants is approximately 7 000. The area of Eno is 1088,63 km2, from which 939,33 km2 is land and 149,30 km2 water. There is 739 km of coast-line in Eno.

Although Eno is a small municipality in size as well as in population, two well-equipped population centres – the parish village and Uimaharju - can be found in Eno within 16 kilometres distance from each other. The parish village is the centre of administrative services of municipality and state. Uimaharju, on the other hand, is the centre of industrial jobs. Local authorities have wanted to bring all-round services near the parishioners, so in a municipality as small as this there are extremely plenty of double services.

There is a child welfare clinic, day-care centre, lower and upper level of the comprehensive school and also premises for the youth to spend time in both population centres. Also library, health care and medical treatment services and a block of service flats can be found in both the parish village and Uimaharju. In a case of fire a unit is sent from the fire department of municipality of Eno and, if necessary, the fire department of the factory of Stora Enso, which is located in Uimaharju, can come to aid. Banks, gas stations, restaurants, accommodation services, kiosks, many shops and a pharmacy can also be found in both population centres.

The river Pielisjoki gives a special feature to the landscape of Eno. The river flows from Ahveninen to Joensuu, through Uimaharju and the parish village. It is the sixth of the most fast-flowing streams of Finland and it combines the two biggest lakes of Northern Karelia, the lake Pielinen and the lake Pyhäselkä. The river Pielisjoki has always had a great effect on the lives of the inhabitants of Eno. It was a remarkable fairway and many of the parishioner earned their living through salmon fishing. The arrival of industry to Eno was based on the rapids and the good floatway of the river Pielisjoki. The river also gave the name for the parish: the word ‘eno’ means ‘big river, stream, main channel’ in addition to the most common meaning of the word, which is ‘uncle’.

The quality of water in the river Pielisjoki has been significantly improved in the 1990s due to the new pulp mill and it’s more efficient waste water treatment. At the same time the interest towards the fishing ground of the river has reawakened. The river Pielisjoki is known as one of the best water systems of the pike. Along with the fishing, boating and canoeing are popular activities in the watershed. The annual Karelia rowing tour from Nurmes to Liperi attracts rowers around Finland and even from abroad to the river Pielisjoki and the municipality of Eno. Also playful Pielisjoki rowing tour has established it’s place in the summer events of Eno.
