El Bolson Tourist Information

When you travel around the roads in our territory while thinking of the diversity of landscapes it offers, do not discard the surprise that new images of intense colour and amazing shapes may add to your imagination. This will surely occur when you cross Cañadón del Fogel on your way to El Bolsón, a picturesque vibrating community crossed by a modern comfortable road amid rainbow colours scattered around the neighbouring slopes. Only the tranquility of a calm cosy town like El Bolsón will be an adequate continent for the excitement produced by such prodigal beauty. Today, the access roads are totally paved and run amid enchanted places you will never forget. El Bolsón ows its name to the geographical formation enclosed by mountains and old glaciars around the city. It is immersed in a valley surrounded by mountains limiting to the south with paralel 42, to the north with Cordón Paleta, to the east with mount Piltriquitrón, and to the west with the Cordillera de los Andes. This region is a part of what is known as "Comarca Andina". The town is at the foot of Cerro Piltriquitrón, on the bank of river Quemquemtreu, surrounded by snow capped mountains, old forests, and unpolluted lakes and rivers . Lago Puelo, El Hoyo, Epuyén, Cholila, El Manso y El Maitén are connected to El Bolsón by their geography, history and ecology. Comarca Andina del Paralelo 42º is formed by eight spots in the provinces of Río Negro and Chubut: El Bolsón and Ñorquinco in Río Negro; El Hoyo, Lago Puelo, Epuyén, Cholila, El Maitén and Cushamen in Chubut. This is a region rich in history, cultural movements, and production. Today the population is approximately 15.000 inhabitants, but it keeps growing. In order to conserve natural and cultural areas, and following the first naturalists like Charles Darwin, Humboldt, Bates, and others, ecotourism has developed. In 1984, El Bolsón was declared Non-Nuclear Area in an attempt to preserve for future generations an area free of radioactive contamination. This active defence of the environment is a constant concern in the Carta Orgánica Municipal, which declares it Ecological Town. This heterogeneous community is formed by migratory currents from all provinces in the country and an important European current, attracted by the magnetism of an exhuberant landscape and the peaceful life of a mountain village. El Bolsón is a place to enjoy all year round: in winter with ski in Cerro Perito Moreno, distant only 25 km., and the rest of the year with different outdoor activities in intimate contact with nature. The community develops an incipient agricultural activity with the cultivation of hop, an ingredient for beer; fine fruit like strawberry, gooseberry, raspberry, cherry, sour cherry, boysemberry, elderberry, maqui, calafate, black currant, and others; sheep and goat breeding for the ellaboration of cheese and yoghurt; trout breeding; and chocolate and regioal icecream production. Among the activities that support the economy are also wool weaving, dry flowers, timber activities, tourism, and handicraft in different materials. From 17th to 20th February every year is the Fiesta Nacional del Lúpulo, Hop Festival. Craftmen have developed high quality products, and expose their work in the Feria Regional every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday in Plaza Pagano. This fair is one of the most important ones in South America with high quality products from 230 stands where you can find pottery, wool, leather, metal, dry flowers, jam, dry vegetables, fresh flowers, knives, candles, in a word, everythig these craftmen produce.
