Eeklo Tourist Information
Eeklo, the chief town in the flat country between Ghent and Bruges, has succeeded in preserving its picturesque smallscale charm. The Neo-Gothic church of St. Vincent in the Flemisch Renaissance style, the beautiful Flemish City Hall with its belfry and carillon, its picturesque houses, some of which date back to the 17th century, all testify to its historical patrimony. Convivial terraces on the market place invite you to sit and rest. The Ledeganckplein owes its name to the town's most famous resident, the poet Karel Lodewijk Ledeganck, whose bronse statue dominates the town square.
Eeklo is a town of schools and shops, but possesses a sports infrastructure which is at once broad and varied. The Huysmanhoeve is certainly worth a visit. The farm, dominated by a majestic portico, dates back to the 13th century. Nature lovers will be overwhelmed by the provincial estate 'Het Leen', sheltering the Regional Forest Museum.
The territory of Eeklo contains the provincial estate 'Het Leen'. While the central part of the estate rather resembles a park, the adjoining areas are, by contrast, more wooded in character. The flora and fauna of 'Het Leen' are enormously abundant, and the estate is furrowed by 63 kilometers of walking paths, 18 km of which are hardsurfaced. The estate is also equipped with a cafetaria, youth centre, and camp ground for young people. It also contains the Regional Forest Museum, featuring all aspects of wood and forrestry, and presenting a number of crafts from past centuries.
