Durres Tourist Information

The ancient name of Durres was Epidamnos and the first marks of the city belong to year 627 b.c. The city's origin is Corinthian. Called later Dyrrachium it became a part of the Roman Empire from 229 b.c. It was the starting point of the Via Aegnatia which leads to Eastern countries, a very important trade road. Cicerone stayed there for a while and called it "admirabilis urbs", admirable city. With the separation of the Roman Empire Durres became the most important port of the Byzanth. Durres was invaded by Normans in 1082 and then by Venetians, who made a ducat of it. Soon Anguins replaced Venetians. In 1501 Durres entered in the Ottoman Empire until the Independence days of Skenderbeu. In 1914, under the Kindgom of Prince Wied Durres became the capital of Albania.

Durres is not very rich of statements from the past. In 1966 archaeologists found a big amphitheatre, with a diameter of 150 mt. who holds approx. 15000 spectators, comparable with the one at Pompei. This amphitheatre was built in the II century b.c. when Durres was a part of the Roman Empire. Today, Durres is a very important touristic city. With a coast of nearly 50 km, it is overflowed during summertime by many visitors.
