Donji Karin Tourist Information
Karin houses a great number of rest homes and weekend houses. The surrounding sea is rich in fish and crustaceans.
DONJI KARIN, a village in northern Dalmatia, on the southern coast of the Karin Sea, 16 km north of Benkovac; population 876. Economy is based on farming, livestock breeding and fishing. Donji Karin is located on the road Obrovac - Benkovac.
A habitation existed already in Roman times (remains of an amphitheatre) as Corinium after the settlement of the Croats, it was the seat of a Croatian tribe, the so-called Karinjani (remains of an altar partition with inscriptions). The town was held by the Gusic family, then by the Karlovics, from 1527 it was under the Turks, then under the Venetians and from 1685 again under the Turks.
On the nearby hill-fort Miodrag are the remains of a fortification (14th-17th c.). A Franciscan monastery was built in the 15th century on the ruins of a Benedictine abbey. The monastery was destroyed during the Turkish wars and restored at the beginning of the 18th century. The church and the Franciscan monastery were completely destroyed during the Serbian aggression upon Croatia in 1991.
