Conakry

Spreading along a narrow peninsula, Guinea's capital city (pop. 705,000) is where many visitors spend most of their time in the country. AmoADVERTISEMENT ng the sights are the Palais de l'OUA (Palace of the Organization of African Unity -- now the president's residence), Musee National (regional displays from all of Guinea), the Place de la Republique, markets, the cathedral (an early-20th-century structure) and tropical flora (mangoes and flamboyants). Conakry has a number of nightclubs offering live music and dancing.

Drive along the coast road and enjoy any of several good beaches, and take day excursions to the Iles de Los, the Kakimbon Caves or (especially if it's hot) the Kakoulima Mountains (at a cool altitude of 2,750 ft/850 m). Tumba Island, near Conakry, has stately colonial villas and a Roman Catholic cathedral built in 1930. You'll have to charter a boat locally to get from the capital to the island. An impressive banana plantation, the Coyah Administrative Center, is about 30 mi/50 km from Conakry.
