Cakovec Tourist Information
Cakovec is the largest and most frequently visited town in Medimurje. The central tourist attraction is the Old Burg, restored and renovated on several occasions until the present. Around the castle is a carefully landscaped park from the turn of the 19th and 20th century - a horticultural monument. Two nice wistaria trees in front of the entrance to the Faculty of Philosophy are also protected as a horticultural monument.
Visitors are offered numerous sports and recreational opportunities in the town and its surroundings. The game is amply represented, which attracts hunting enthusiasts also from the neighbouring countries. Fishing (angling) is possible on the nearby Drava and the Mura rivers.
The most important events in the town are the Cakovec Days of Croatian Music and the Carnival, especially notable for attractive masks and traditional folk customs. The Cultural Centre organizes music, theatre, folklore and other performances, with a special emphasis on the original Medimurje folklore.
CAKOVEC, a town in the region of Medimurje, 14 km northeast of Varazdin; elevation 165 m; population 15,999. It was first mentioned in 1328. Cultural, administrative and business centre of Medimurje. Economy is based on textile, food (flour and milling products, edible oil, animal fodder), wood and timber (furniture), leather (footwear), metal-processing (foundry, machine production), building material and printing industries. Cakovec is located on the main road (M12, E65, E 71); railway junction (Zagreb - Varazdin - Cakovec - Nagykanizsa; Varazdin - Cakovec - Lendava); small airport for aerial sports.
