Cachoeira

Cachoeira has been declared a National Monument in 1971 and, after Salvador, it is the city that concentrates the most important architectonic collection of the baroque style in Bahia. Its houses, churches and historic buildings preserve the image of the times when Brazil was an empire. At that time, Cachoeira was a rich and populous city. Actually, it was one of the most important cities in Brazil during the XVII and XVIII centuries.

During the XIX century,Cachoeira became important for the brazilian political History. The fights against the Portuguese and the proclamation of Dom Pedro I as the regent are facts that happened there and that, until today, make the inhabitants of Cachoeira very proud. On the empire times, Cachoeira as named "Heroic city".

More recently it became important for being a center for the development of the tobacco industry.
