Cabar Tourist Information

CABAR, a town in the northern part of Gorski Kotar, in the valley of the Cabranka river; elevation 523 m; population 597. Economy is based on wood-processing. The town is located on the regional road: a border crossing between Croatia and Slovenia.

In 1651 Petar Zrinski built a blast furnace and the forging works, as well as an aristocratic citadel. In 1663 he founded a parish and erected the parish church of St. Anthony of Padua with a three-storey bell tower in Baroque style; the church is reached through a monumentally conceived staircase. In the church is the altarpiece by Valentin Metzinger (18th c.). The castle of the Pa-ravic family dates back to the 19th century, which has partly (outer walls) preserved the onetime defence elements of the Zrinski citadel. - Within the reconstructed castle are donations of the painter Vilim Svecnjak and the donor Marijan Filipovic, as well as the Native Collection. The preserved forging works Urh has continued the blacksmith's tradition from ancient times.
