Butrinti Tourist Information
Butrinti is one of the most interessant localities in Albania, full of extraordinary historical depositions. A legend, written by Virgile in the IIIrd book of Eneide, says that Buthrotium was founded by Hektor with the help of some Troian refugees. History says that Buthrotium (Butrint) was founded by the inhabitants of Kerkyra (Corfu), in the VI century b.c. Butrint became a important centre of trade and there was a road to Aulona (Vlora) Apollonia and Epidamnus (Durres).
Butrinti was invaded by the Romans in the IInd century, who made a holiday-inn there. Archaeological research has brought relics of Greek, Roman, Byzanthine and Venetian culture. The histoyr of Butrint is in fact the same as Albanian's. Invaded by Venetians, Anguins, Ottomans. The only difference is the short period of freedom when Ali pasha of Tepelene came forward.
Today Butrinti has only turistic importance. It is situated 20 km away from Saranda. It is near a lake, the lake of Butrinti and near the Ionnian sea. The antic city has a theatre of a greek-romac architecture. There is also a castle of XIV century that demonstrates the importance of the city during all times. Inside the castle today there is a museum.
