Brsec Tourist Information
The central part of the village is located on a 157-m high coastal cliff, offering view to the island of Cres and Vela Vrata (Big Gate) of the Kvarner Gulf, while the remaining parts of the village have developed next to the surrounding arable land. The surrounding areas abound in plants of the sub-Mediterannean community of oak and hornbeam. Brsec is also known for being the birthplace of the writer Eugen Kumicic (1850-1904), the opponent to the pro-Hungarian policy and the author of the novels Urota Zrinsko-Frankopanska (The Conspiracy of the Counts of Zrinski and Frankopan) and Zacudeni svatovi (The Wedding Party Remained Astonished). The recommended outdoor activity is walking to Sisol (833 m).
BRSEC, a village on the eastern coast of Istria, located on the karst slopes of Ucka Mountain; population 121. The central part of the village (elevation 157 m) is located on a steep coastal cliff rising abruptly from the coast inwards; the cliff is an orientation point for the ships making port into the Rijeka channel. The main road (M2, E751) connects Brsec with Moscenicka Draga and Plomin. A mountain trail goes from Brsec to Sisol (835 m), the southernmost peak of Ucka. Chief occupations include farming, viniculture, livestock breeding and fishing.
A mediaeval town was organized on the steep coastal cliff around the former citadel, and it was crowded inside the defence walls. The mediaeval parish church of St. George was extended in the 18th century; the so-called golden altars date back to that time. On the main altar from 1654 is the Baroque altarpiece The Adoration of the Magi the inscription above the doors to the sacristy is from the same period. - Original forms and beauty of profane architecture have been preserved in the village.
