Bonito
280 km far from Campo Grande, state capital, Bonito is a small city located on Serra da Bodoquena region, to the south of Pantanal. Rivers and lakes with incredibly transparent water ideal for diving and flotation, besides impressive caves and rocky formation attract Brazilian and foreign tourists.
Bonito is a standard city in terms of tourist organization. With all its attractions destined to nature, it has adopted a visitation system to protect the environment. Almost all rivers, lakes, caves and forests are private properties and can only be visited with the intermediation of authorized tourism agencies and with specialized guides. It’s established a maximum number of tourists for every attraction. The tickets are charged.
Many rivers options with crystalline water, where flotation is possible. Using a special neoprene cloth, mask and snorkel, the visitor fluctuates calmly through courses with calm current. It’s possible to see with incredible sharpness fishes common to the region, like piraputangas, pintados, pacus and dourados. Where: on Aquário Natural da Baía Bonita (Natural Aquarium of Baía Bonita), Rio Sucuri (Sucuri River), Rio do Peixe (Peixe River) and Rio Formoso (Formoso River).
An impressive rocky formation full of speleotems. Deep in the cave with white calcareous walls, there’s a lake with transparent and calm water, similar to an enormous blue mirror. It’s 100 meters high and 70 meters deep. The visitor comes near to the border, but is not allowed to touch the water. The cave is registered by IPHAN (Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional - National Institute of the Historic and Artistic Patrimony) and has a limited number of visitors per day.
Mainly independent diving to the experts and authorized people. Where: Abismo Anhumas (Anhumas Abysm), where you can get by rappel and observing speleotems, free diving in a lake 80 m deep. Gruta do Mimoso (Mimoso Cave), a submerse cave. Lagoa Misteriosa (Misteriosa Lake), a crack more than 200 m deep.
Farms around the city receive tourists for hikes or rides through the forest or by boat, kayak and floats by the rivers. And you always have the chance of refreshing in a waterfall. The biggest waterfall is Aquidabã river, with 120 meters.
Bonito offers hotels with different levels of comfort and prices. It has simple restaurants that serve prepared meals with fishes from the region. Be prepared as there are very few bank branches in the city.
It’s 280 km far from Campo Grande, by the road BR-060, via Nioaque and Guia Lopes da Laguna. There are buses departing from Campo Grande.
