Boipeba Tourist Information

Boipeba

The name Boipeba comes from the word “mboi-peba” in Tupi language (the language spoken by most Indians in region), that means “flat snake” – possibly a reference to the marine turtle, or to a specie of snake that, when irritated, becomes flat.

The island is located at the south of Tinharé, and there we find the villages of Velha Boipeba, Moreré and São Sebastião – this one also known as Cova da Onça. In Velha Boipeba it is located the Mother Church of Divino Espírito Santo (from the beginning of the XVII century) and, in São Sebastião, the Church of São Sebastião (from the beginning of the XX century). Boipeba offers ecological tracks that go through Mata Atlântica. In order to get to the island, the visitor should go through an unpaved road until Torrinhas’ village or ride a tractor from Morro de São Paulo.

For those who enjoy nature, the island has a great variety of fauna and flora species.
