Bischofferode Tourist Information
The monastery Gerode was first mentioned ion the deeds in 1186 as monastery village. The churches of Bischofferode are succeeding a Cutis Chapel, probably built as early as 743/745. Every royal court used to have its own chapel, which was situated either within or nearby the Curtis;- as well as a Franken Mill, at least one Villa Regia, and often a Sunder, usually a Feudal forest. These characteristics can be verified in the Curtis Husen. North of Bischofferode is the Männerholz (wood of the men), which belonged to the house owners who had the right to cut an annual amount of wood for their own use. It borders the extensive woods of the former Benedict Monastery Gerode. Until the beginning of the potash mining at the beginning of 1900 agriculture was the dominating source of income. Then the new industry dominated the area until the 31st December 1993, when mining was being stopped in Bischofferode. Traditional crafts have become of increasing importance.
