Bird City Kansas Tourist Information
Bird City is located in far northwest Kansas on US 36 in Cheyenne County.
This fertile land was once covered with buffalo grass, which made ideal grazing grounds for large herds of bison. After the herds were killed off in the 1860s for their hides, cattlemen used the land for grazing large herds. The manager of a land cattle company was a man named Benjamin Bird.
Kansas Day has been celebrated annually in Bird City since January 29, 1930. Only the state capital has celebrated Kansas Day longer.
The wild ring neck pheasant was introduced into Kansas, in 1906. The habitat in the area has proven to be a near perfect environment for this game bird. Hunters from all over the United States come during the season of mid-November to the end of January to hunt these wild birds.
